Planning the Road Trip

by Apostrophe

Robin and her sister are sitting at the kitchen table. Between them rests the road atlass. Jessie helps Robin plan her route up to Jersey. Robin talks excitedly about the trip. She has planned it all winter in her head. Now the trip quickly approaches. Four weeks left and she leaves, with her best friend Beth.

Jessie is an experienced highway driver, and she is giving tips to Robin, about driving on the highway. For the most part the conversation is serious, with a few jokes thrown in. Robin talks about her trip as they plot the route further. She listens closely to her sisters advice, while studying the map. Images go across her head of the road, and the signs she will see.

A feeling of excitment enters her heart. She remembers how exciting it is to see out -of -state friends. Especially for the first time. She then realizes why this trip is so important to her, and how it got her through the dull, depressing winter.

Jessie is concerned for her sisters safety, but knows she will be fine.

I got a little confused in the first two paragraphs. I’m not sure the present tense works really well here, or maybe I’m just having an off day. I think it’s more to do with the confusion it seems to create about where we are in the story: are they planning, on the road, about to leave, already left?
