Wesley had been in her room for quite a while. Kevin had gotten worried and gone in to check on her. I was sitting on the living room couch with Nick and Joe. I heard voices coming from Wesley’s room, but couldn’t make out what they were saying.
Finally, Kevin and Wes emerged. Kevin seemed upset. He was staring at Wesley in a sympathetic way.
Wes’ face was pure white. She looked shocked and in disbelief, but I had no idea why.
“Wesley’s aunt died,” Kevin gravely told us. “And…her uncle wants to put her in a foster home.”
Nick, Joe, and I all gasped. We had couldn’t think of the right thing to say, so we stayed silent until Mrs. Jonas came in from the kitchen.
“What’s going on?” she asked.
