“Do you want to dance with Jeremy?” Marnie whispers in my ear as the DJ announces he’s going to ‘slow it down a bit’, code for ‘let all the losers watch the happy people cuddle on the dance floor’.
“No thanks” I reply. If I was 14 I would be satisfied with being set up with someone to dance with. At 20, pretending my feet hurt seems like a better option. Especially when Marnie is the one volunteering her partner. She is someone I never really got close to because I was jealous. Becky had the confidence to compete with her, I just shrivel in her presence.
“Are you sure? I just think it might hurt his feelings, he asked me if I would ask you for him” she says in an even softer whisper.
Either this gorgeous guy from Denver actually looked past Marnie and somehow saw me, or Marnie is a lot nicer than I thought and made this up to try and save my dignity. Either way, someone is being really nice to me, it just will be a little more difficult to appreciate if Marnie is the philanthropist.
