Some Foreign Field

by Russell Ruffino

“This is the first time I’ve ever been abroad Roger.” Frida said, trying to take her mind of the circumstances in which she was holidaying.

“Shush Frida, call me Dieter, and we only talk in German from now on.” He chastised, slipping easily into a flawless German accent.

“Sorry.” She answered. “I can’t believe half of what Winston, or whoever that was said to me.”

“You shouldn’t, some of it wasn’t true, walls have ears, even in U-Boats. Have you heard of bouncing bombs?”

“Yes, everyone has.”

“Of course, the war’s worst kept secret, but they aren’t meant to be a secret, the real secret is that they don’t work. And in 2 days time they’re going to be dropped on a dam not far from here.”

“But you said they don’t work.”

“No, but the German spies don’t know that, and while the officers guard their dam from aerial attacks we’ll blow it up from the inside. It’ll be one of the most important events of the war and great propaganda for the allies. This could be the turning point of the entire allied war effort.”

I wonder if their burgeoning romance was all a ruse on Roger’s part… I guess Margie/Frida is too concerned with more pressing matters at the moment to worry about that!

The plot thickens! If you can’t trust Churchill, who can you trust? I’m sure there’s a perfectly good reason for bringing an innocent cryptanalyst along on a deadly sabotage mission, but for now I’ll shift the focus over to Ana Cristina’s concern, which is surely more important to our protagonist as well. ;-)

Funny idea with the ‘bouncing bombs’, which I can’t even imagine what that would mean or do.

Bouncing bombs are a real thing. One of the most ingenious moments of the war, and they were used against dams. There’s a film about their invention and use called “The Dambusters” which is shown on a yearly basis in England. It’s got a cracking theme tune as well.
