I decided to go for an evening stroll. I walked about three blocks when I felt it. My heart stopped and my breath grew sharp when I turned to face it.
“Oh, it’s you.” My sigh of relief was cut short when I saw the fear in Alva’s eyes.
“They’re coming.” He pulled me into the shadows. “They cannot find this,” He said, pressed a cold object into the palm of my hand.
“Your grandmother’s locket,” I whispered uncomprehendingly.
“Take it and leave this place,” Alva’s voice was heavy.
“Where will you be?” I asked, understanding at last.
“If I tell you,” he said, will a small smile appearing on his scarred face. “I’ll have to kill you.” With a swift kiss, he began running away from me; the sound of the approaching “birds” drowned out his footsteps.
Sighing, I fastened the locket around my neck and began to run.
I couldn’t let the “birds” catch me.
