National Service

by Russell Ruffino

Frida made her way towards the truck, with Dieter keeping closely behind her, she reached the the truck as her eyes adjusted to the low light. She could make out a young man behind the wheel, if he was pleased to see them he didn’t make it obvious.

She opened the door and waited for Dieter to offer to help her up to the cab, when it became obvious that no such offer was forthcoming she made the ascent unaided.

The truck could seat three up front so she took the empty space nearest the driver, who paid her no attention. Turning round she saw Dieter flashing a torch, presumably some kind of code. She started trying to work out which code he was using when it occurred to her that he was pointing the torch inland.

Eventually Dieter clambered into the empty space, which stirred the driver, he took out a flask and wordlessly handed it to Frida. She took a gulp of the lukewarm tea and gave it to Dieter. He sealed the flask back as up her eyelids began feeling heavy, and she dropped into a deep sleep.

Interesting twist with the sleep-inducing tea. It heightens my fear for the heroin in the story. Her genuine trust despite how everything seems to be moving her to a state of disequilibrium is almost pathetic. Love this series you and uselessness have going.

Looking forward to the sequel. I don’t know how I missed reading this when it came out. (And the things you boys keep putting Frida through! The poor thing.)
