Choose Your Own Adventure

by thebetweenspace

You are walking in downtown Atlanta, circa 1976, feeling an intense aura of violence, abuse and destruction. Graffiti marks the haunting grounds of several street gangs. You quicken your pace, hoping to make it to your car before violence erupts.

The homeless are scattered about, resting under trees, and on sidewalks. Some peaceful, some talking to themselves, some seemingly ready to become unhinged at the slightest provocation.

You see a couple of gang-bangers attacking a snarky business man, who, in your opinion, must have been crazy to walk these streets alone.

You pause for a moment, because a question has entered your mind. And it seems that the manner in which you answer this question will seal your character until the end of time.

The question, haunting in its simplicity, lurks within the dark side of your mind.

Good and evil battle for your soul, as you twirl the thought in your mind.

If you join the gang, turn to page 2

If you stick up for the businessman, turn to page 3

Dark, horrible take on the ‘Choose Your Own Adventure Series’. I don’t remember this one, and I read a lot of them. As is, makes for kind of a funny spoof/parody thing.

I just started reading through the different “pages.” Yikes! It’s so gritty and realistic, I feel like I’m watching it unfold before my eyes – well, except for the part where your “hero” says “Like the movie?” I can’t imagine anyone would say that! Then again…

Yeah, I only added that (like the movie?) to make myself laugh. I used to love Choose Your Own Adventure books as a kid. This is my dark and horrible (thanks THX ) attempt of ‘bringing it back’.

What a coincidence, I was just about to start a CYOA series of my own! Nicely done. Maybe I’ll contribute to yours. We should come up with a format for encouraging branching storylines on Ficlets. Reminds me of a web site I discovered twelve years ago that is surprisingly still online today:

Hey, great minds think alike. If you add to mine, I’ll add to yours! ;) (Okay, okay. I’d probably add to yours either way).

Good idea only having 2 choices after each one. If I could change anything about the one I started it would be that. The 3 choices meant it just became this big sprawling monster of a series that I couldn’t keep track of and occasionally got lost in.

Oh, wow. I should have searched to see if anyone else had already done this. Oh well, I guess the more the merrier.

Very interesting. Did you see the challenge with the CYOA stories? That was fun. Anyway, I like this take on it, with a darker, different reality.
