All Dolled Up

by Russell Ruffino

“I’m not scared!” I say, to the others, before putting my trembling hands in my pockets. Every street has a crazy old lady, and the house we had just walked into belonged to Mrs Unbuckle, and boy was she crazy.

Four of us walked into the house, we left Jimmy behind as a lookout. He’s younger than us so has to do what we say. I was curious to see what the house looked like, some kids said it was full of cats, others said her husband’s skeleton sat in a rocking chair that never stopped moving.

I was almost disappointed at first, dolls, loads and loads of dolls. Granted it’s weird, but it didn’t feel weird enough. Then my gaze happened upon a group of dolls on the table.

“Hey, Tess, this one looks like you.” I picked it up to show her but she’d gone white as a sheet.

“Put it down.” She gasped. I didn’t understand but I tossed it back on the table, as it hit the mahogany I heard two cracks and Tess fell down and started screaming.

I wanted to go help her but was transfixed by a doll that looked just like me.

Ooh… creepy. Dolls have always freaked me out a little. It’s their staring eyes. [shudders]
Works well as a stand-alone but I’m compelled to want to know what happens next!

Ha! Very creepy. Dolls with a voodoo sort of feel. Very cool.
