Civil war letter part 2

Is it so bad to have the blood of your enemies on your hands? Is it so dreadful to hear the cries of dying men and feeling nothing but pride for the kill? To walk out into battle and know that you will kill young men who’s existence had just begun, but have no concerns? I trust not, for many of my fellow confederates do not, nor do I. Some would call me heartless, saying that I have ruined my chance at God’s heaven, but I believe not. Do I not show more devotion for Him than I show for my home? For Virginia? Do I not pray for my opposites souls as we all ride carelessly into battle? Even as I kill and maim the men I fight against, is it not for a justifiable cause? I believe so.
Hope, you are a rare being today. No one will speak it aloud but we all know the truth. We read it in the lines on each others faces and the slump in our shoulders. This was a loss that we may not recover from.
