My father was a waffle iron. An ordinary, slightly scuffed, no-frills waffle iron—I’ve seen pictures. How he managed to seduce my mother, a beautiful Belgian, is anybody’s guess. I once found some syrupy-sweet love letters he sent to her during their courtship; I doubt his words won her heart.
