The Hardest Part

by John Perkins

“I’m not sure what you mean.” Angela closed her copy of Cosmo and laid it on her lap. “What do you mean… steps?”

Staring so intently at my shoes they began to smoke, “uh, well,” I tilt my head up to catch her unflinching gaze. “You remember that whole abduction thing from a few years ago, and I said I’d be done with the business for good?”

“Yes.” She placed the magazine on the coffee table and gave me her full attention. This was going to be harder than I had imagined. Her green eyes that once reminded me of the scenery from The Sound Of Music, were now but two horizontal slits on her face. It was a very knowing look, and it told me to tread carefully. “I remember.”

“Well, you know how hard it’s been to find a decent position since Oracle. I tried everywhere, but with so many software developers out there looking for work, the competition has been stiff. So, I had to take a job with GlobTrak.” I barely finished my sentence before she flew off the couch and was within inches of me. “I’m sorry.”

I was a bit worried about how to handle her breaking the news to her and pretty glad that you decided to step in and handle it.

    Very nice part one.

Wow, the way she flew off the couch doesn’t bode well for his future at home or work. Very understandable reaction on her part.
