Friggatriskaidekaphobia

“Well, be careful out there, it’s Friday the 13th, don’t go under any ladders or open an umbrella inside the house or cross the path of a black cat, ok dear?,” said Nathans mother before he left for the last day of the school year.
“Mom, today is not the unluckiest day, it’s the last day of school, so it is the luckiest day ,summer has officially arrived,” Nathan said excitedly, as only a ten year old boy can.
“Just stay alert, you know mommy has Friggatriskaidekaphobia,” his mother replied.
Ficken… what?,” Nathan said surprised.
“Not fricken dear, you know mommy doesn’t like that word. Friggatriskaidekaphobia is the fear of Friday the 13th,” his mother answered.
“Well, Mom, I’m not superstitious, I’m not afraid of Friday the 13th, or black cats holding umbrellas that break mirrors under ladders, you don’t think logically Mom,” said Nathan sarcastically, as he tripped over his untied shoe laces.
“See, let that be a lesson to you, always listen to your mother on fricken Friday the 13th,” his mother said.

I can imagine saying that word to a ten year-old and the confusion that would ensue :) Good job conveying that. A very fitting ficlet for today!

Wow, I had forgotten it was Friday the 13th. I once got into a car accident on a Friday the 13th, so I have a healthy respect for the day! I really liked this, particularly that witty last line.

Nice fit for today! knock on wood I’m not supersticous about Fri 13th. Very witty with the “Frickin…”-somethingorother-phobia. Not only was it good entertainment, I expanded my vocabulary by one (very long) word! WooHoo!

love the picture that you chose.. Its so arty and different. The story is cute too. I love how the innocence of the child resonates throughout the story.

Loved that last line. Very fun stuff, but darkly tragic example of how parents pass along fears and anxieties to their kids.
