The Anticlimax

by Eckhouse

The ground shook with guttural fury as it pressed against adjacent landmasses. The sky, seared a vivid orange, was dense with the noxious gasses emanating from the surface. Viscous residue slid across the rocks and congealed, scorched by the ambient heat.

In all of this, however, invisible bits of matter had come together. Mired in the ooze, they had collected by happenstance and added to their mass, forming a larger bit just like the smaller ones.

Through this growth, the groups of matter had created needs of energy, which in turn had spurred the development of limited sustaining functions for its intake and processing.

Two particular groups, with abnormally high functional capacity, were then drifting in each other’s direction. Their combination would result in the most complex organism in existence, prompting a metamorphosis of function beyond mere energy intake toward producing their own viable substances for growth – an organism far greater than the sum of its parts.

Sadly, nothing happened.

I didn’t know whether to feel amused or saddened by the ending. OK, your entry trumps all the others for choosing the most anticlimactic twist in history. The title barely does it justice. ;-)

This proves the Scientologists correct. Without Xenu putting all of those Thetans into the volcano, the first true life form would have never evolved.
    Awesome entry.

I think you win for going the farthest back in imaginable history. Great idea, very outside the history textbook box.

Nicely done. The last line says it all. Now, is this what might have happened, or is this real life? I know it’s intended to be the former, but with the way things are it feels like the latter. And I’m with THX on this one: I think you went as far back as anyone could go.
