Twelve Inch High Underdog

by YodaOnCrack

As a nine year old Jack Russel terrier, George had seen
many marvelous things in the the New Zealand town of Manaia.
From chasing cats along the golf course to terrorizing
chickens near the old flour mill, George had enjoyed his life in the land of the long white cloud.

As the group of school children left the Manaia candy store that day, George’s ears sprung up and his weak old heart sensed that today would be climactic. Before the two hollow eyed pitbulls could reach them, George placed himself between the deranged beasts and the five small children.

The tiny terrier fought to the death as the children witnessed
his oversized heart beat out of his chest.

...and as the children fled and wept, George took his
crowning breath.

I like the different point of view in this. Your writing really conveys the sense of purpose this dog feels. Didn’t this actually happen? It’s really cool that you brought a new type of heroic perspective to the story.

I never thought a ficlet would make me cry, but this one did. Well done… so much so, I had to add a sequel because I couldn’t leave it without an ending.

This is sad, but also shows the pride that some people should have in their pets.
