Sully’s father and mother looked at him with gaping mouths, afraid to blink or the moment would pass. Dad finally folded his arms across his chest and leaned back against the kitchen counter.
“Okay. I give up,” he started, “Who are you and what have you done with our son?”
Mom shushed him as she flung a dishtowel his way. She walked over to Sully and reached up to put her arm over his shoulder. Only fourteen and he’d already outgrown her, “I think it’s great that he’s found something that makes him like, this.”
She squeezed him and went back to washing the dishes when his older sister, Kara, walked through the door. “What’s wrong with your face?” she asked sardonically.
“It’s called a smile, buttmunch.” he snapped back, still smiling.
“Keep this up and we might have to re-name you. Something like, Cozy or Happy or,” her eyes glittered mischievously as she turned from the fridge, “Or G…“
Before she could finish, Dad interrupted, “Don’t go there, Kara.”
“What?! I was going to say Goofy!”
