“Hello?” George answered the phone, not recognizing the number.

“Mr. Stephens. This is Yugo Svenson. I’m an assistant of Mrs. Fields.”

“The cookie lady?”

“Yes.”

George turned in his chair, away from the computer monitor, devoting his attention to the call. “Cool. But why did you call me?”

“You work for Barton Sloan, of Sloan Confections?”

“On occasion. What’s it to you? Or Mrs. Fields for that matter?” George turned back to the monitor and typed “Mrs. Fields” into his Google Toolbar. A craving for chocolate chip cookies surged through his body; his mouth became noticeably moist.

“We have been developing a new cookie recipe that we feel will change the face of mall bakeries forever.”

“I was unaware there was a face of mall bakeries to change.”

Yugo cleared his throat. “Yes. Well, this recipe was recently stolen from our lab by Mr. Jose Montega.”

Montega? George’s eyes widened. “Ok, so what’s this got to do with me?”

“We would like to pay you fifty thousand dollars to retrieve the recipe for us.”

    This is the end/beginning. I had a good time writing this, and I hope at least one or two people enjoyed reading it. Some of this may not fit perfectly because I ended up writing it backwards, and had no idea what the story was when I started. Kind of an odd way to write, but really fun and different.
    One note. The guy who picks up George in the first/last one of these is supposed to be Tony from the previous two ficlets. If there is interest, I may write an epilogue as I like both of those characters.

    After all of that great fun, it’s about a cookie recipe to end all cookie recipes? That makes it even better. I loved the line: “I was unaware there was a face of mall bakeries to change.”

    Go for the epilogue. They must have been fun characters to write. This was insane, what with the notorious cookie recipe, but really, really well written. Awesome work.

    i agree totally with Ana. Go for an epiloguge! and I have one question.. isn’t Tony working for Sloan?? if so.. why did George go with him?

    Cookies!?! Honestly, what has this world come to? And Sarah never knew she’d be killed over cookies…bet she was a girl scout as a child too. Shame.

    Ha…hahaha…hahahaha…
    That’s just funny stuff. Although the gritty, crime-oriented side of my fiction-analytic mind thinks that maybe these cookie and confection companies aren’t what they appear to be.
    And, oddly, Bill Shatner and Tim Curry’s characters in the Loaded Gun movie comes to mind.
