The Question

The streets were dark and eerie. I kept glancing behind me nervously as if someone was about to kill us like in horror movies. Abby looked at me, strangely. “What’s wrong?â€?

“Nothing.â€? I lied and I’m not the best liar.

“You didn’t tell anyone, did you?â€? I was about to lie again but Abby screamed.

I gazed in the darkness to see what was causing her screams and it was a shiny black car zooming behind us, a gun sticking out the window. And then everything happened to fast.

Abby’s screams continued until the gun’s bullet came out at her. Then all was silent except for the tempo of her breathing stopping and the car driving by. Despite the dark car, in the passenger seat I could see … just barely … my boyfriend.

Weeks later when he was in jail, he had told me that anyone who kills someone else deserves to die. But if Abby killed her baby and he killed her, shouldn’t he die too? I pondered that question until no answer appeared and my mouth seemed to stop working and the words just never came back out.
