"Making It" Is Redifined

“You’re never going to get anywhere by just doing nothing!” He looks at me in confusion, “I started out small, kept my nose clean, and look where I am now! I mean, don’t you want to be someone?”

“No, I really don’t. I don’t want to be like you. You’re never home, never make it to any of my shows, and you just buy me something to make it all better. I’m not going to be like that.”

He stares at me as if this was some new concept to him that he would never be able grasp.

“I want to travel with my band, and maybe someday, we will make it. But maybe we won’t. But I won’t let my life revolve around success. I want to see the country through the eyes of real people. Small towns, big cities. I want to find the heart of America. Find out what makes people tick. Find out what they really want. I know it all sounds cheesy and you probably will never understand,but at least try.”

He sighs and looks away, still looking confused and now slightly saddened. I almost feel bad for the guy. Almost.
