When No One Is Watching

I stood alone in a crowd of oblivious city dwellers, who were oblivious to my obviously well hidden emotional pain. For though the scars of her death were still lashed across my heart, I took strange solace for a life that goes on in this crowd of obliviousness.

It’s not everyday that you meet by chance someone who is meant to be yours, then spend the next seven to ten years of your life in a series of misadventures while all the while taking a life path straight back to that someone. Even heavily made-up middle agers can find redemption at the one true love that they’ve avoided all this time.

For even though our major cities, a lot of people and life as we know it were destroyed when the aliens attacked, the human spirit is too strong to keep down. We will pull together – oblivious to color, race or creed – rebuilding ourselves in some hearty former image of ourselves. Until no one is looking anymore, that is, at which point we will devolve into the same petty bullshit that’s sustained us for years.
