Distraction

I watched from my windowed corner office as Annette quickly walked to the stairwell, with Jake following shortly after her. I knew those two had something going!

And I was pretty sure her widening hips, thickening thighs, and plumping breasts meant she had BIG news to tell him.

I wasn’t jealous, though she had been checking me out lately, and I returned the looks. No, I was just a little peeved that we might have had something.

Annette was a quiet, hard worker, but her eyes were deep and soulful. The first time I met them, I was taken back. Such brooding eyes that bespoke a desire to be important to somebody. She was needy, and I was a sucker for unfortunates.

But maybe I was just the cute girl in accounting, desirable only for the chance of promotion. I felt disgusted at myself, how gullible I was! Falling for a pair of eyes!

I stopped staring at the door to the stairs, it hadn’t opened and I had work to do!

The phone rang. “Hello?”
“Eva! I’ve got a new client for you!”

The perfect distraction.
