Meeting Lizzie

But how? Why? There was no way to know so she did the
only thing she could. She walked into the kitchen and said,
“Hello.”

“Ahhh!” the woman screamed, knocking over a nearby
copper pot. “Oh – hello there,” she said laughing out loud.
“You scared the beans outta me. You must be one of
Willy’s little friends. You seen him? He’s not with those
Lambert boys again is he?”

“No, um, I mean yes ma’am. I saw Willy at the cemetery, but
I don’t…”

“Well, he’d best get back soon. If those horses ain’t fed, his
Daddy’s gonna get him and get him good,” she said,
squinting her eyes and smiling.

Overwhelmed, Sarah broke down and cried, running over to
the woman and sobbing in her arms. “I want to go home,”
she said between tears.

“Shh, it’s alright dear. My goodness! There’s no need to
get so worked up. We’ll take you back home,” she said,
pulling her away slightly so she could see her face, “where
are you from, dear?”

“2007,” Sarah said as tears streamed down her cheeks.
