What Maggie Wants

by Batak Beatrix

What Maggie wants is a way out. A way to escape the tedium of mediocrity that shackled her to the shit town that had defined her entire existence up to this point of her miserable life. She hated it there, hated every goddamn person she saw on the street. Hated everyone except for Tessa, the one friend with whom she spent her adolescence dreaming of escape.

Now she hated Tessa too. Tears stung her eyes like fire as she drove away from the side of the interstate, leaving her only friend to wait for her shit-brained boyfriend, her stolen luggage sitting in the packed snow at her feet.

The radio was an insistent whine in her ears, the one broken speaker causing a disequilibrium that made her nauseous. She slapped blindly at the dial, relief when silence filled the car. The town limits were in sight again and the tears progressed to heaving sobs, making it difficult for her to drive. She pulled over, and collapsed against the steering wheel, giving over to her emotions.

There was no escape. Not for her.

Ooooooooh, rock on, Batak! We all flitter around writing about who might pick her up, and you tell us who dropped her off. I love it! Genius!

A great character sketch, and expanding the scope to show the “collateral damage” caused by a friend’s departure was a great idea to pursue. I enjoyed this considerably, thank you.
