“Mrs. Thompson?” Scarlet stood in the doorway. The clock had just struck ten, and Holden’s mother was alone in the den. Mrs. Thompson lowered her glasses and set her book on the couch. “I know that you hate me because I cost Holden his job, but I would like to get to know you-”
“What did you say?” His mother’s eyes narrowed.
“I really would like to get to know you…”
“Holden lost his job?” Scarlet face changed to match her name.
“I’d thought he’d told you…” She turned and ran to Holden’s room. “Holden. I made a terrible mistake… I have to leave.” Holden sat up.
“I’m sure whatever you did it’s reversible. What did you do?” Scarlet collapsed atop his bed. “I inadvetently told her you lost your job. Now you see why I have to leave tonight!” Holden laughed out loud. “That’s all? I thought you’d told her you were a criminal... No, it’s fine.”
