Melancholy Heartbeat
Pitter patter-pitter patter, went the rain. I loved the sound, loved the dull greenish light that bathed my backyard as the storm began, loved the melancholy mood such an evening brought with it.
In the distance, a siren sounded, shrill in contrast to the gentle heartbeat of the raindrops. I closed my eyes just to listen, to be one with this moment.
I was so close to peace now that I could almost taste it, as though it was something tangible I could reach out and clasp dear to my heart.
Through the rain, I thought that if I listened hard enough, maybe I could hear him through the distance and the noise. The rain was a veil of sound that I almost imagined I could hear him speak through, softly call my name.
I smiled.
The moment I had it, I lost it.
You don’t realize how far you’ve walked until you turn around and see the distance. Similarly, you can’t keep this feeling when you know you have it.
A tear ran down my cheek, chased by another.
My heart went out to the rain, a never ceasing beat.
