Addiction

I sit on the floor and take out a cigarette. I light it and wait for the effect.
“Give me one,” comes Daniel’s bored request. I hand one over and we wait, the both of us, on more alcohol and cigarettes. We wait on the consequences of our habit.
The music continues to get louder so I can’t hear anymore. We sit in silence.

“It’s late, Daniel. We should go.”
Daniel coughs and I start to worry about him. Smoking is deadly; I’ve always known that and now I can’t stop.

Before I met Daniel, I never smoked. I found it disgusting and none of my friends were ever allowed to smoke around me. Now that’s changed. He went out with such a cool group of people, that I felt like an outsider because I didn’t smoke. Now I’m addicted but Daniel loves me and I feel lucky because of that.

Daniel says something so I sit up. He hands me another cigarette and I take it and stand up.
“These things are horrid,” I spit at him. “I’ve had enough. We’re through.”
I leave with the smoke still in hand.
“Julz, give it back! I need it!”
