All Hallow's Eve, Part V: The Couple Meet
My hand closed over the doorknob. It felt cold and clammy to the touch. As I was about to turn it and open the door, it suddenly opened on its own, and I nearly screamed. But it was just Brett.
“Shh!” he whispered as he pushed me into the room. “I could hear you talking to Sister Eustace in the hall. I had a feeling it was you. What took you so long?”
“Sorry! She caught me the first time so I had to improvise and ask if she wanted some tea.”
As we entered the room, Brett quickly locked and bolted the door behind us. He turned to me with what I thought was a seductive smile, his brown eyes twinkling.
“Who knew? The captain of the cheer-leading team is good looking and smart.”
Giggling, I playfully slapped Brett on the arm.
He said, “So what are your plans? It’s going to be a long, long night. St. Bart’s tradition solemnly states that we need to stay until the first light of dawn.”
Now that I was actually standing here in front of Brett, I began feeling unsure of myself. Even a little, well, scared.
