Whatever Happens Next
A young girl sits on the swing of the elementary school playground. No one approaches her; the other children think she is strange. She appears content just to swing on her own, holding onto the rough chains for dear life.
She knows that later in the day, her mother will come to pick her up early. Other kids would jump at this chance, but Molly wishes it did not have to be this way. Because her mother will not drive her to a routine dentist’s appointment. When Molly gets into the car, she is headed for Mercy Hospital.
Many elementary schoolers have never set foot inside this building more than once. But the nurses know Molly by name; the doctors don’t even need to look at her charts to know who this girl is, this pretty little slip of a thing with the dark hair and dark eyes.
Molly is headed to the hospital for a routine bone marrow aspiration. For now, she is in remission. For now, her leukemia is hiding. But who knows what this test will show?
She holds her head high, but deep down, she is afraid.
