Saying Sorry

She sat on the fence, staring out at the sunset. The breeze tossed her hair slightly into her face, but she made no move to push it back. She felt the tears slowly streaking down her cheeks and reached up once and awhile to wipe them away.

The crunch of leaves on the ground behind her, alerted her to someone approaching. She didn’t turn, or even move to acknowledge that she knew the person was there.

He came to stand behind her. He had his gaze lowered to the ground, and his hands deep in his pockets. He shuffled his weight from foot to foot, trying to find the right words to say.

“I’m sorry.” He murmured, unable to form any other coherent thought.

“I really wish saying sorry was enough to make me forgive you.” She whispered. “But I just can’t…”
