One Thing Remains the Same

It had been a very long and hard day. The sun chose not to shine, he just wanted to stay in bed. As did the rest of us. The wind whipped at the broken trees left from the previous night’s storm and all was well. At least in this part of the town. If you could even call it that now.

Buildings were completely decimated and the few sentient creatures that remained, stayed holed up in the feeble shelters that had withstood the blast of of the tempest. Waves surged against the sandy threshold only giving a gentle reminder that it remained unchanged.

A tiny set of eyes scanned the landscape from behind the thick glass of the window. “May we go now,” the young boy timidly questioned his mother. Wrought, with anxiety, she, wringing her hands, peered out the window. A heavy sigh fogged the pane, “I don’t know.”

The father rose from his place in the darkened corner, and paced to his family. Muttering to himself, “Not safe still. It is there. I feel it in my bones. In my gut even. One step out and it knows.”
