In the Mirror, Darkly

The building retains that so-old-it’s-hip-again veneer of glass and metal on the outside, and the insides were refurbished a number of years ago in an attempt to remove as many of the life-ending materials that were standard construction practice forty years ago. Some of the office spaces like mine were nicely redone and look relatively current, while other spaces that I’ve seen appear to be nothing but rolls of cheap carpet and wallpaper covering unspeakable sins on the walls and in the flooring.

I am afraid of the bathroom on my floor because when I see people use bathrooms like this in TV shows and movies, these people often die, or engage in malicious actions that ultimately result in dying. Half of the fluorescent lighting doesn’t work, and the half that does hums loudly. Toilet paper is a rarity. One of the toilets is broken, with a section of piping still on the floor of the stall from an aborted repair attempt. Bathrooms like this one are used equally as often for peeing as for heroin use.
