Consequences

Maggots gushed out of her mouth and eye sockets between the stitches and flooded the gruesome living corpse. She moaned and wailed through her lips which had been sewn together, making meaningless shrieks of pain and terror as she was devoured alive from the inside out. Welts, scratches, and scars continued to appear on her decaying flesh though the tormentor was nowhere in sight. As her mangled body contorted, a river of blood flowed from her body. Now, looking away from the glass sphere projecting these vile images, I glanced at Mary, my companion. As I watched her face contorting much like the writhing body shown on the crystal, it all became clear to me: this was the punishment, the “contrapasso” if you will, for whatever appalling sins she had committed in life, the sins we had both committed.
