Not Alone Anymore
I was helpless, no one to call for, no one to hear me if I did call out. I flicked my flashlight over what appeared to be an entire pack. Some of the wolves were snarling and some had their teeth bared. I was mesmerized by one in particular. His eyes cut through me and seemed to see into my very soul. I moved bit by bit, laid down the flashlight and did what some primordial instinct prompted me to do. I lowered my eyes and slowly, slowly lay down and brought my feet up into a fetal position. I rolled over onto my back, holding my body as relaxed as I could. I kept my eyes downcast and waited. What I assumed to be the leader snarled and growled. The other wolves hung back, I could only feel his presence near me. He growled a warning, deep in his throat and I closed my eyes, praying that I would not be torn from limb to limb and eaten alive. If there be any mercy at all, let me die with the first bite. He snapped at my hair and my body tensed. He sniffed at my ear and a shivering giggle escaped me. I’m doomed!
