Cough Drops
“Found any water yet?”, the dark shape shouts. “What’s taking you so long?”
You cannot catch a break, except for maybe your ankle. You just left to fetch some water a second ago and she’s already nagging you for a drink. Why did she follow you out here? Who is watching the baby?
“I know the baby needs a drink, darling,” you tell her. The word “darling” sticks in your throat like a cough drop with some of the paper still stuck to it. “I found the well. It’ll be just a minute.”
You stand up, look around, then return to the watering hole. The fog gets thicker as you get closer to it, almost as if the well was causing the white-steam to rise from some netherworld of evil beneath its cement casing. But now you are no longer afraid. What could be scarier than your wife, in the dark?
You notice the well has a circular casing made of concrete surrounding the watering hole. Hanging above the water is a metal bucket. Oddly, the bucket has a Coors beer logo on it, just like the ones at Bubba’s Bar and Grill.
