She had deliberately mentioned Anna to distract me. “Don’t give me that ‘I just knew I could’ nonsense,” I countered. “Bringing things back to life and knowing that 37 Patrolmen are a mile behind us are not the kinds of things you just know.”
Almost dawn. We approached the outskirts of town, and a smattering of lights on the horizon was reassuring. She squirmed as she searched for an explanation. As a brother, I always took pleasure in making my sister uncomfortable, but this was different. This – whatever she did, whatever she was – could make a difference.
“I think I was born with it,” she started, staring off into the landscape. “I don’t know… it was just one day years ago, and we -“
“We? Who’s we?” I turned back and forth, appraising her and then the road. “Who else knows about this?”
Her eyelids drooped. I felt bad for pressing, but I had to know.
“The only other people that know,” she said quietly, “and that I ever talked about it with were the others like me. Different.”
