Magnus is Latin for “Great,” but — I believe — starting with Aleistar Crowley it became a reference for a powerful mage.

And nothing happened to Simon’s memory… he just can’t remember one obscure chant. But, I mean, he knows Arabic; cut the boy some slack.

I chalked Simon’s memory loss up to the pressure he must’ve felt, but maybe it’s more basic.
