Nothing There [Crossover Challenge]
The river twists and turns, taking Ana’s boat away from the main lake. It grows narrower, until finally she is forced to dock on the muddy bank. She continues on her journey, letting her feet take her where they choose. As she follows along the river, she sees a figure ahead of her.
Stacy is sitting on a log, staring at the river. Absorbed, she does not notice the girl swiftly approaching her. All she has eyes for is the river, the sand river. What happened? Everything is so far beyond her grasp.
The two girls eyes meet at the same time, and simultaneously they speak. “Who are you?”
“Ana.”
“Stacy.” Staring at each other, they are now dumbstruck. For they are identical, the same dark hair blowing in the breeze.
Ana tears her eyes away from Stacy, dipping her fingers in the water.
“The sand—” Stacy says.
Ana is confused. The river is just as sparkling clear as before. “No,” she says. “Just water!”
But when she pulls out the photograph to show Stacy, she is met with a blank stare. “Nothing there!”
