The Bunny

Today I got a bunny.

Yes, I know what you are thinking. A bunny??? A dog is so much cooler, or an iguana, or a snake, or even a cat if you have too! If you’re going to get a pet, don’t get a bunny.

Well, my grandmother gave it to me. She lives on a farm and has many, many bunnies. Not rabbits-bunnies. She never calls them rabbits. She gave me one of her precious bunnies, caramel-colored with black, shiny eyes. My mother went out and got me a cage and litter and food, and my dad set up everything in my room. I went to sleep.

The bunny kept me awake. It snuffled and shuffled and made noises. Finally I got up and took it out. I hadn’t held it yet, and was surprised by how bony and fragile it felt under the fur. I got back in bed and set it beside me, resigned to a bad night’s sleep. But as the bunny settled in, scooching its body into my side, I closed my eyes and sighed.

Today I got a bunny, but I think i’ll live.
