the window of the past
I looked out my window for the thousandth time today. Seeing people pass by me all somber like. They were lucky they could go out. Once the war started I wasn’t aloud to go outside without an adult. I missed the days before the war, I miss sitting on the front stoop and laughing while eating oranges. I miss oranges. I miss my best friend. She wasn’t aloud to go outside either. I looked outside my window. The tree, the mighty oak. I missed climbing up that and dropping water ballons on the adults that passed by with Rachel. I must have been sitting there for a while because the next thing I knew my mother was calling me, Anna you will have a visitor tonight. I looked up and there was Rachel. I blinked and looked again she was there and smiling. I laughed my mother looked grave. Girls I will be back up later Rachel you fill Anna in. I stopped smiling. What was going on? Hi I said almost in a whisper. Hi she said smiling .But she was sad. What’s the matter I asked? You know about the war right, I nodded she sat.
