The Promise 3

The seconds count down like rainfall from an endless grey sky.
It’s not enough. There’s never enough.
I could spend a lifetime lost in this sweet embrace-
An eternity counting the gentle beats of your tender heart
As it lay softly pressed against mine.
I could spend forever in this moment,
And still it would not be enough.
I held you in my arms with a kiss gently placed against your ear-
Not having the strength to look into your sad sullen eyes-
And whispered, with slow quivering lips:
“Two years. Here. Again, in two years.”
...
Like fingertips tracing an unseen path down the side of my face,
I felt your tears.
The words you spoke barely audible,
But so filled with pain and heartache:
“Promise. Promise me.”
And so I did.
And so it was,
My last gift to you,
A promise.

Do you remember?
