Unicorn Morning
When Jennifer woke up the next morning, for a moment she thought it had all been a dream, but then she looked in the mirror and saw—herself, looking perfectly normal, just like she’d always looked. But somehow different, in a way she couldn’t describe.
And she knew why this was. She was a unicorn now. Even if she looked like a human at the moment. She supposed that it must be some kind of protective camouflage, like how baby deer were dappled. If unicorns were so hard to catch, it stood to reason they’d be hard to find.
“Jennifer, hurry or you’ll miss the bus!” her mother called from downstairs.
Jennifer wondered if unicorns still had to go to school. She guessed until someone told her they didn’t she’d just assume they did. She didn’t want to make her Mom angry.
But she wasn’t quite fast enough. Jennifer reached the curb just in time to see the school bus turn the corner at the end of the block, driving away. What was she going to do now?
