Caught, V of the Thoughtful Chronicles

The Bird-childs wonderous eyes lingered on the stale, chewed cigar sitting on the table before piercing the old man’s tired face with her inquisitive gaze. A terrible conciousness filled the very air and both breathed in the assumed bewildrement of the others intentions.

The girl spoke in a strange tongue to the man, it sounded like she said “Ohseeyoh”.

“I’m sorry, I don’t understand you.” The girl closed her eyes and seemed to focus herself. She slowly opened her eyes and even more slowly spoke.

“Mai name is Fala. Do not be scared.” The old man could hardly speak. Maybe she is a ghost come to punish me.

“I know what you did to your grandson. Fret not. Fate had purpose. You have been sparred by nature, but why, i know not.” He continued to stare at this remarkable being. He could not conclude what she was, or what she was talking about, until she lay her hand on his brow and he saw. He was the last human on the earth. Nature had managed to destroy all others, and spared an old decaying man.
