He Wished He Was A Kid Again

In a tavern in Philadelphia I overheard an old man say,
and I thought he was out of his mind, being a young man I just laughed it off when I heard him,
he said, “I’ll never again turn a girls head, run off on a long weekends date, I’m halfway home to the end, and I wish I was a kid again.”

And the old man continued, “Going places I’ve never been, but who am I kidding, I’m old and alone, youths for the youth of this world, and oh, life goes so fast, the years turned what little hair I have grey.”

He was talking to some young folks, who didn’t seem to care what he said.

“Lord, I wish I was a kid again”, the old man kept repeating into his gin all the night as the younger men talked and sang songs of delight.

I walked out the door at quarter to four, feeling bluer than blue, hoping that when I was his age I wouldn’t be wishing I was a kid again.
