Atrophy/Convalescence
It was nearing 1:00 am. All the same-time could stop completely, and she would hardly notice. Frozen, hurt, stuck it was how she felt. She drank down another gin and tonic, trying to numb herself. The painful memories clawed at her psyche. The more she drank the more visons of his smile seemed to haunt her. She could almost hear his voice and smell the scent of his cologne.
“A rum and coke, please” She said
She drank it down and then left. They would have kicked her out soon anyway. The thoughts were relentless. She returned to the apartment. A snap-shot of him still rested near the bedside table. She flung it to the floor. Her vision blurred with tears as she collapsed in a fit of sobs. She couldn’t breathe and couldn’t think about anything but him. The pain was unbearable now. It was strange to hurt so much you felt numb. She didn’t realize how many pills she had swallowed, just that there were two left. She clutched a teddy bear,a gift from him,to her chest and shut her eyes for the last time.
