A place for a challenge: Mother number two
I parked my car in front of Claire’s house. 5234. Wiping salty tears from my cheeks, I looked at myself in the rear-view mirror. Wow, I look like a car wreck. I walked out of the car, locked the door, and made my way up the long single car driveway to the quaint brown brick home.
The door opened before I even made it to the steps leading into the family room. “Laur, I’m so sorry honey.” Her mom sighed hugging me close. I knew Claire wasn’t home. It was a Tuesday and every other college student was in class, except me.
She helped me into her kitchen and sat me down at the table. The house is cozy, especially the kitchen. It always smells of a pastry. No dishes match, food is always out, and every wall painted a different color. “Jan and the Amazing Technicolor Kitchen” as Claire calls it.
“Peppermint tea? Of course, that’s what you always have.” She chortled. She put the tea cup, the peppermint tea bag. a box of tissue, and a garbage can in front of me. “Lauren, just talk.”
I tried but began to cry.
