Realization

“Don’t you love the insulation that our parents have provided for our house?” I said as I tried to make her notice the walls.
Confused, she glanced around the room.
“What’s this? Electrical wiring? But that’s been banned!”
“Yes, it has.”
Shock seemed to sink into her head as her eyes widened with realization. She looked down, then up at me. Slowly, she turned around and continued the descent. With great caution, she took every step as if each were a difficult choice.
After what seemed like an eternity, we reached the bottom of the staircase where a strange kerosene lamp burned.
“Michelle, what are you doing?”
She ran off into the darkness with great determination.
“I did just like you said.” said Michelle in the black abyss.
“Yes, you did. Fantastic work.” the deep voice responded. “Becca, nice to see you again. It’s been so long.”
The voice’s source slowly came into the light of the lamp.
“Uncle?”
