I disagree with White Hat. The last sentence works well within the context of what you’ve got going here. And what makes one man miserable can make another man happy.
This story reminds me of a quote: “Ask yourself whether you are happy and you cease to be so.” – John Stuart Mill.

I’ve watched similar situations. As for “happiness,” it is an elusive thing.

Interesting pairing of ficlets and certainly thought provoking. Not sure I get the ‘moral’, if you intended one. I treat a lot more people who fit the second one than the first one, and, well, I don’t treat people for excessive happiness. Okay, sometimes I do, but that’s a separate thing.
