Another One
Yesterday Master put a new cage in our room.
Master had just cleared my dish. Ian hadn’t gotten any food because he misbehaved again. I sat patiently waiting for Master’s next command. I was hoping he would bring me dessert since I was being so good, but when he came into the room again, he didn’t bring dessert. Instead, he was pushing a large wire cage.
“What is that? Why are you bringing that here?” Ian shook the bars of his cage when Master wouldn’t answer him.
I hissed at Ian to be quiet or else he wouldn’t get any meals tomorrow, either, but he wouldn’t listen. He kept shaking the bars of his cage.
The new cage was larger than ours and had what looked like a cushioned floor. Our cages didn’t have that.
After pushing it into the corner of the room, Master turned off the light and left, shutting and bolting the door behind him.
I listened as Master’s footsteps receded in the distance. Ian’s voice came out of the darkness: “He’s bringing another one.”
“Another one of what?”
“Another one of us.”
