Ficlets

book holds the answers..yea. right..

I skimmed through the pages, not making sense of most of it. “What is this book?”, I asked.

“That book is the most prophetic work this world has ever produced!!”, stammered Catfish, as though I had just uttered blasphemy.

“A book… from 1979… is a prophetic work of art?? What did it prophesize prior to this then?”, I challenged.

“Subway.”, Catfish stated unequivocally.

“Wait.. there were subways in New York LONG before 1979.”, I replied.

“Not ‘subways’.”, Catfish clarified. “Subway.. The sandwich restaurant.”

I shook my head at that. Even if the book DID foretell the formation of a restaurant chain (which I was at a loss to understand) I didn’t see how a restaurant chain equated to the ‘end of our time in the universe’ theory I had been hearing about all morning, and stated this to the Catfish.

His whiskered fish face turned red. “We don’t have a lot of time and your belief is irrelevant. Just find the darn mice!”, he yelled.

I skimmed further into the book.. “Magrathea.”, I said.
