Iambic Pentameter

When William Shakespeare wrote his famous plays
He used this form of meter that you see.
Five feet, iambic, rhymescheme optional.
It’s not blank verse, it’s beautiful and free.

To speak in poetry is somewhat strange;
“Nobody talks like that,” you may well say.
And yet, it’s elegant. No-one admits
The fact that, now and then, it’s used today.

“I loved you, dear, before we ever met.”
“We suffer now, but soon the world will know.”
“Although we die, our sons will bear the flag.”
“I wish I could be here to watch you grow.”

Although the writers of the past are gone,
Their work has power that we cannot forget.
We look to them for guidance, strength and peace.
The heartbeat of their words is pulsing yet.
