the spell breaking

“You’ll forget me,” he assured her.

She shook her head, the tears streaking down her cheeks. “No, never.”

He cracked a slight smile. “Yes, one day you’ll forget me. I’ll turn into just this feeling of maybe something missing. But nothing will be missing because you’ll forget me and all of this.”

“I could never forget you,” she sobbed. “How can you say that?”

“I can say it because I’ve seen it so many times. The moment we say good bye, the memory of me will fade until my face becomes that of a stranger.”

“Impossible,” she whispered. She reached out and touched his face. “You could never be a stranger to me.”

He sighed. “Close your eyes.”

She stared into his eyes for a long moment before she complied.

“Say goodbye,” he said softly.

She shook her head.

“Please,” he commanded quietly.

“Goodbye,” she managed to choke out.

He watched her face change. The spell breaking.

“Goodbye,” he returned, wiping her cheeks.

“What’s happening?” She asked, confusion in her voice.

“A new life for you,” he replied.
